Co-Housing

History of
Cohousing.

An idea more than fifty years in the making — from 1972 Denmark to modern communities across the world.

Cohousing

What it is

Privacy and community, together.

Cohousing describes a modern way of living that combines the privacy of an independent home with the benefits of a small, active community. Each resident keeps their own space and independence, while sharing common areas and everyday moments.

It is neither a flatshare nor a care facility — but a different philosophy of living, built on freedom of choice and mutual support.

Where it began

Denmark, the late 1960s.

1960s
Families in Denmark look for a way of living that keeps the privacy of a home without losing daily human contact.
1972
The first organised Cohousing community is created outside Copenhagen. The model spreads across Northern Europe.
Today
A mature form of living with more than 50 years of development, found in many countries around the world.

Senior Cohousing

Autonomy, without isolation.

As life expectancy rose, more and more people past 60 sought a way to keep living independently without stepping away from social life. So Senior Cohousing was born. Today there are hundreds of such communities across Europe and North America.

Why now in Greece

It is Greece's turn, now.

This modern form of living is now coming to Greece. Although Cohousing has been widespread abroad for over 50 years, in Greece it is still taking its first steps. ESTIA was created to bring this internationally tested idea to our country, adapted to the needs and culture of Greek society.
